The Grand Rising Respite Facility and Shine A Light in the Dark, are committed to preparing the next generation of nurses to provide compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. Through collaborative educational experiences, we offer specialized mental health training designed to enhance nursing students' understanding of behavioral health, crisis intervention, therapeutic communication, and the relationship between physical and mental wellness.

We currently collaborate with the Blinn College Nursing Department to supplement classroom learning with practical, real-world behavioral health education. Our trainings are designed to help nursing students develop the confidence and clinical skills needed to recognize, assess, and respond to patients experiencing mental health concerns across a variety of healthcare settings.

Training topics may include:

  • Mental Health Assessment and Early Recognition

  • Trauma-Informed Patient Care

  • Therapeutic Communication Techniques

  • Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Disorders

  • Suicide Risk Assessment and Prevention

  • Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Strategies

  • Cultural Humility and Patient-Centered Care

  • Self-Care, Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout Prevention

  • Professional Boundaries and Ethical Considerations

Our interactive training combines evidence-based education with case studies, scenario-based discussions, and practical skill-building exercises that prepare students to deliver holistic, patient-centered care. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the emotional, psychological, and social factors that influence health outcomes while learning strategies to support individuals with empathy, professionalism, and clinical competence. We seek to strengthen the behavioral health knowledge of future nurses and contribute to a healthcare workforce that is equipped to address the growing mental health needs of individuals, families, and communities.
